Summary

Unpopular opinion here。This book was unnecessarily long。I'm so disappointed because I was hoping to love this one but unfortunately this did not live up to the hype。 Unpopular opinion here。This book was unnecessarily long。I'm so disappointed because I was hoping to love this one but unfortunately this did not live up to the hype。 。。。more

I think it took me a while to write this review because of how wonderful it was, sometimes I had to read other books between this one because I did not want it to end, the story is so exciting, the characters are so well done that despite being bad it is inevitably to identify a bit with some of them, it is one of the best books I have read this year and it will be unlikely to forget about it。

This book is hands down amazing。 It maybe would not appear so, if considering how long it took me to read the actual book。 However, it had everything。 The characters were all complex and diverse in their own ways You can't help but love them in some twisted way even though you shouldn't。 The plot, at times was slow but it was well developed and engaging。 The book has faults。 Whatsoever, I would read this book again and again because it was that good。 This book is hands down amazing。 It maybe would not appear so, if considering how long it took me to read the actual book。 However, it had everything。 The characters were all complex and diverse in their own ways You can't help but love them in some twisted way even though you shouldn't。 The plot, at times was slow but it was well developed and engaging。 The book has faults。 Whatsoever, I would read this book again and again because it was that good。 。。。more

An absolutely fantastic read。 For some reason unknown I can't quite put a finger on what about The Secret History is so good, but it really is, trust me。 Definitely for older readers as it contains drugs, excessive alcohol misuse, death and murder, inexplicit sex references。 An absolutely fantastic read。 For some reason unknown I can't quite put a finger on what about The Secret History is so good, but it really is, trust me。 Definitely for older readers as it contains drugs, excessive alcohol misuse, death and murder, inexplicit sex references。 。。。more

I was always so curious about this book。 It took me a while to get into it but once I became invested, there was no way I wasn’t gonna finish it。 Loads of the Greek stuff went way over my head but the characters fascinated me and the story kept surprising me, particularly towards the end。 So yeah, 5 big ones。

In her debut novel, Donna Tartt tells an entirely new kind of story--a "why-done-it," where you're told on the first page that there will be a murder。 The story follows a unique but highly flawed group of students at a private school in Vermont and is narrated by Richard, a student on scholarships who lies about his wealth and background to fit in with the elites in the Classics department。It's a coming-of-age story and a brilliant character study。 Donna Tartt's writing is beautiful and compelli In her debut novel, Donna Tartt tells an entirely new kind of story--a "why-done-it," where you're told on the first page that there will be a murder。 The story follows a unique but highly flawed group of students at a private school in Vermont and is narrated by Richard, a student on scholarships who lies about his wealth and background to fit in with the elites in the Classics department。It's a coming-of-age story and a brilliant character study。 Donna Tartt's writing is beautiful and compelling as always。 I enjoyed every page and couldn't put it down。 。。。more

I really loved this book! At around page 150 it was a little slow in my opinion but quickly got intriguing that I thought about it all the time。 The writing is so beautiful, it was sometimes hard to get through but I won't want to change it at all。 Anyone who loves the dark academic vibe, you would love this book! Reading this was quite the experience, I have never read a novel that’s made me feel completely disoriented apart from this。 This is such a unique read I’ve never read anything that felt so brilliant to read yet so exhausting。 This took me a long time to read due to its length and literary nature I enjoyed it I didn’t feel like I was reading forever because I was gripped。 Tartt’s intentions from what I can gather is placing The Secret History as a critique of elitism of academia and upper class Reading this was quite the experience, I have never read a novel that’s made me feel completely disoriented apart from this。 This is such a unique read I’ve never read anything that felt so brilliant to read yet so exhausting。 This took me a long time to read due to its length and literary nature I enjoyed it I didn’t feel like I was reading forever because I was gripped。 Tartt’s intentions from what I can gather is placing The Secret History as a critique of elitism of academia and upper class life in America which is done very successfully。 This novel displays the consequences of grief and madness, alcoholism in upper classes and how that lifestyle goes unnoticed when one goes mad。 The narration by Richard was interesting not one of my favourite narrators but I feel like the fact all the characters were horrible people is intentional even though I really wanted to like both Camilla and Francis I just couldn’t。 If you’re thinking of reading this I’d say definitely do as it is a unique experience and brilliant the only thing is very long and can get draining at points。 This book also deals with very dark topics which should be acknowledged before reading。 This swept me away in a dream like state the writing is exquisite and it deals with the characters guilt and grief in extremely human ways。 All the way towards the end I just felt like I was itching for more and when it reached its final point I felt like the ending was worthy of the story。Overall, I really enjoyed reading this and would definitely recommend even as just a talking point as I haven’t read anything like it。 。。。more

4。5 stars。 An excellent genre-bending foray into class, elitism, and self preservation。 This novel opens with the narrator confessing that a murder had been committed, and that he was partially responsible。 This mystery has been termed not as a "whodunnit", but as a "whydunnit。" A lengthy tome without beautiful writing and characters in which you feel a deep sense of investment。 4。5 stars。 An excellent genre-bending foray into class, elitism, and self preservation。 This novel opens with the narrator confessing that a murder had been committed, and that he was partially responsible。 This mystery has been termed not as a "whodunnit", but as a "whydunnit。" A lengthy tome without beautiful writing and characters in which you feel a deep sense of investment。 。。。more

Captivating read and I'd be lying if I didn't relate a little to the "Californian goes to Northeast Liberal Arts College" element of it (don't worry, the rest is unrelatable!!)。 It felt like the pacing was a tad inconsistent — a spectacular slow burn accelerated quite quickly at the end。 Otherwise, great book! 3。5To be perfectly fair, I would've killed Bunny too if I had the chance。Edit: looking at the reviews for this book is hilarious。 So many "I hate every character" and "I couldn't relate to any of the characters。" Honey, if you relate to — or even passably like — any of the characters in this book, get help。 You're not meant to。 3。5To be perfectly fair, I would've killed Bunny too if I had the chance。Edit: looking at the reviews for this book is hilarious。 So many "I hate every character" and "I couldn't relate to any of the characters。" Honey, if you relate to — or even passably like — any of the characters in this book, get help。 You're not meant to。 。。。more

The main reason why I truly disliked this book is its sheer lack of originality。 There's a big chunk of The Great Gasby, even bigger melange of Bret Easton Ellis' works and whatever other American classic that is known and widely read。 Every twist and turn, every plot point reminded me five other things that I've read from better writers tbh。 Tartt's writing is stunted and devoid of any visceral characterization。 Her characters just went through motions for me, like rusty robot puppets。 They wer The main reason why I truly disliked this book is its sheer lack of originality。 There's a big chunk of The Great Gasby, even bigger melange of Bret Easton Ellis' works and whatever other American classic that is known and widely read。 Every twist and turn, every plot point reminded me five other things that I've read from better writers tbh。 Tartt's writing is stunted and devoid of any visceral characterization。 Her characters just went through motions for me, like rusty robot puppets。 They were all indistinguishably bland too。 Sometimes I had to go back and read the action descriptors to remind myself which two were in the scene and which one was saying or doing what。 Bunny was so out place in this story; there was literally no reason why he would be accepted to Julian's class when he was so clearly the most academically inferior of the bunch, and even if Julian let him in, there was no way he'd be accepted into the friend group where he was so clearly hated by everybody。 Everything was so fuzzy to me。 Things came and went as they fit the purposes of this sluggishly moving story。 I'm sure she was referencing something with the way that she wrote the murder scenes, but as a reader, I had no sympathy for anyone involved in these scenes when we only got the third-hand retelling of a retelling with every death。 Despite the death toll being quite high, it felt like nothing was happening, because everything was so spaced apart。 Paragraph upon paragraph about people having a bacchanal, killing and scheming and it was just all so cold and numb all the time。 Past the mid-point, at this point having given up on the plot, I had a mildly enjoyable Stockholm-syndrome-enduced interest in the characters but Tartt very masterfully ruined that for me as well。 What's so aggravating is that, despite of her high-brow cynical attitude, Tartt was so clearly operating from the vantage of middle American morality。 She served the cake to her characters, but she never let them eat it, or at least make that choice for themselves。 Everyone who was so chaste, so collected, so in touch with all 7 of their pagan chakras went mad and became suicidal alcoholics overnight and manifested unexpected sexual aptitudes because of a "merder"。。。 While Richard was a complete dud, Julian was a lame enigma to me。 If I were Aristotle, I would be offended tbh。 。。。more
